The 09 Grenadier is the standard issue mecha for all non scout trained NCO's of the FIST armed forces. In the FIST military structure, these men have volenteered at the end of their conscripted enlistment for continued military service.
Each fire team of five mecha is commanded by one corporal in a Grenadier. In addition, Squads are commanded by Seargents, also in Grenadiers. Lead NCO's for units larger than company sized are often senior enough to aquire the vastly more expensive and deadly Sniper. Since the purpose of a Grenadier is to provide tactical fire support at the squad and fire team level, the Grenadier carries 6 highly advanced Shrike missles. These very accurate smart missles will continue to attack a target until they connect or run out of fuel. In addition, the Hellfire multifunction Laser suite that is standard issue is upgraded, being able to withstand more damage before becoming inoperative.
After a particularly vicious uprising in which the natives used large numbers of very cheap small warhead missles to strip away armor, FIST upgraded these machines with a refined armor that will defeat high density, low damage swarm missle attacks.
Tactical doctrine is for the Grenadier to use its missles against high value targets, while the Advanced sensor pack picks out hidden troups for its companion Pounders. Once a target is aquired, the Pounders concentrate their fire while the Grenadier either provides anti missle defense or suppressive fire as indicated by the tactical situation.
